About Genesis
English rock band Genesis formed in 1967 at Charterhouse School in Surrey. The band has been through numerous line-ups over the last five decades, the most commercially successful one consisting of bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford, keyboardist Tony Banks, and drummer/singer Phil Collins. Their 1970’s line-up featured singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett.
The group were formed by five school pupils, including Banks, Rutherford, Gabriel, and Anthony Phillips, and named by a former pupil Jonathan King, who arranged for them to record several singles and their debut album, From Genesis to Revelation in 1968. After parting ways from King, the band began touring and signed with Charisma Records and released Trespass in 1970. Phillips' departed that same year which led to Steve Hackett joining the fold, and also made way for Collins to join in time to record Nursery Cryme in 1971 following the departure of drummer John Mayhew.
Foxtrot (1972) was their first hit in the UK and Selling England by the Pound (1973) reached number three in the charts and featured their first UK hit I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe). 1974’s concept album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway led to a huge transatlantic tour, which turned out to be Peter Gabriel’s last with the group. Collins later took over as lead singer, and the band released two records in 1976. Hackett left Genesis in 1977, reducing the band to a trio of Banks, Rutherford, and Collins. Their ninth studio album, ...And Then There Were Three… followed in 1978 and contained the band's first major hit Follow You Follow Me. Their next five albums – Duke (1980), Abacab (1981), Genesis (1983), Invisible Touch (1986) and We Can't Dance (1991) – were also successful.
Phil Collins left Genesis in 1996, and Banks and Rutherford replaced him with Ray Wilson, who appeared on their final album Calling All Stations in 1997 before the band went on hiatus. Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins reunited for the Turn It On Again Tour in 2007, and again in 2021 for The Last Domino? Tour which was initially postponed due to Covid restrictions, and will now take place later in 2021.
In 2014, Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Collins and Hackett all reunited for the BBC documentary, Genesis: Together and Apart, the program focused on the band's history and each member’s various solo albums. Genesis have won numerous awards including a Grammy® Award for Best Concept Music Video with Land of Confusion and have inspired a number of tribute bands, who recreate Genesis shows from various stages of the band's career. In 2010, Genesis were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
