About Barbra Streisand
Award-winning American singer, actress and filmmaker Barbra Streisand - known for her number one singles including The Way We Were, You Don’t Bring Me Flowers and Woman In Love, as well as film appearances in the critically acclaimed Funny Girl (1968), Hello Dolly! (1969) and many more - has achieved huge success across her seven decade career.
Born in April 1942 - as Barbara (Barbra) Joan Streisand - Barbra’s career started in Broadway Theatres and local nightclubs in the early ‘60’s before she signed to Columbia Records and released her debut, The Barbra Streisand Album (1963), which won two Grammy® Awards. As a musician and songwriter, Streisand is considered one of the best-selling recording artists of all time having released over 30 studio releases, including nine live albums. According to the RIAA, she is the highest-certified female artist in the United States, a title she shares with fellow singer-songwriter, Mariah Carey. Streisand has topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart five times with singles The Way We Were, Evergreen from A Star is Born, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) and more.
She also holds the women’s record for number of albums to have topped the US BIllboard 200 chart with 11, and is one of the only performers ever to be awarded an EMMY®, a GRAMMY®, an Oscar and a Tony® Award (EGOT) throughout her career.
Streisand ventured into films in the 1960’s. Her movie credits include starring roles in critically acclaimed Funny Girl (1968), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Additionally, she acted in the musical Hello, Dolly! (1969) and the romantic drama The Way We Were (1973), amongst others. She won a second Academy Award for composing Evergreen from A Star Is Born (1976), making her the first woman to be honored as a composer.
Her list of “firsts” continued into the early 1980’s with the release of Yentl, which saw her become the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major studio film and the film itself won a host of accolades, including an Oscar for Best Score and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Musical. Streisand also received the Golden Globe Award for Best Director, becoming the first - and for 37 years after, the only - woman to win that award. The second female winner being Chloé Zhao in 2021.
She has continued to direct films, and up until 2012, was still acting, including memorable appearances in The Guilt Trip with Seth Rogan, and in the second and third film of the Meet The Parents franchise, Meet the Fockers (2004) and Little Fockers (2010) alongside Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller et al.
Her accolades to date now include two Academy Awards, 10 GRAMMY® Awards including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Grammy Legend Award, five Emmy® Awards, four Peabody Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and nine Golden Globes.
